January marks the annual observance of School Director Recognition Month, a time to honor the commitment and service of school board directors who champion public education across Pennsylvania.

More than 85% of students in the commonwealth attend public schools — including the 4,000 learners enrolled in the Waynesboro Area School District. Working together with the WASD superintendent, the nine members of each local school board make thoughtful, often complex decisions that shape the educational experience and help every learner discover their path to success and create a positive working environment for our faculty and staff.

To celebrate these dedicated public servants, the Waynesboro Area School District will honor our school directors with a dinner and entertainment by the WASHS jazz band on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

School board directors play a crucial role in our public education system. They devote countless hours—voluntarily — to the demanding work of board governance, including budget approvals, policy adoption and long-term strategic planning. Their unwavering dedication and deep-rooted passion for their communities are truly commendable.

As part of its ongoing commitment to effective leadership, the Waynesboro Area School Board will also be adopting the PSBA Principles for Governance and Leadership. This framework outlines actionable steps designed to enhance board effectiveness. Research confirms that the decisions and actions of school boards directly impact student achievement, making it essential for boards to continuously strive for excellence.
