Mark Smtih

Message from Mr. Mark Smith, WASD School Board President. Welcome Back to the 2023-24 School Year:

Today, as we stand at the threshold of a new academic year, as a fellow educator starting my 28th year, I am honored to share a few words with our first year teachers.

Your decision to embark on this nobel journey is a testament to your dedication and passion for shaping young minds.  As you step into your classrooms, remember that you hold the power to ignite curiosity, foster critical thinking, and nurture relationships that transcend textbooks.

Teaching is not merely a profession; it’s a calling that beckons us to create a lasting impact on the lives of our students.  One of the most vital gifts we can offer them is the ability to think critically.  In a world of constant change and evolving challenges, critical thinking skills empower our students to analyze, question, and seek solutions.  Encourage them to explore, debate, and embrace diverse perspectives, for it is through this process that they will become informed, engaged citizens ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

But teaching is more than just imparting knowledge; it’s about forging connections.  Establishing positive relationships with your students lays the foundation for a safe and nurturing learning environment.  When students feel valued and understood, their potential soars.  Take the time to listen, to understand their individual stories, and to provide guidance that extends beyond the classroom.

While we stand in our classrooms, let us also remember that our impact reaches far beyond those four walls.  Our public education system is a cornerstone of our community, and it’s essential to showcase the remarkable accomplishments that transpire within our schools.  Share the stories of triumph and innovation, the moments of discovery and collaboration that unfold daily.  Be an advocate for your students and fellow educators, championing the positive change that education brings in our society.

In conclusion, you are stepping into a role that holds immeasurable potential.  The seeds of critical thinking you sow, the relationships you cultivate, and the positive narratives you share will shape the future of our students, our schools, and our communities.  Embrace this responsibility with an open heart, a curious mind, and un unwavering commitment to the betterment of our society through education.  You are not just teachers; you are architects of possibility and agents of change.

Welcome to the journey.  May your path be illuminated by the countless sparks of curiosity and the boundless potential of the young minds you guide.

Thank you.
