What is the STRIVE Academy?
Waynesboro Area School District STRIVE Academy……
We pride ourselves on providing a quality program that supports each student with their specific situation. We will work hard to help your child quickly and successfully reintegrate back into the regular education setting to obtain his/her high school diploma.
We are not to be a replacement for the quality of academics offered in the regular education setting, however, we are a short term program with a focus on behavior. It is our goal during your child’s time in our program to redirect the behavior/s that brought him/her to this point. At the same time, the goal is to keep your child in his/her academics so he/she can return to the regular classroom as soon as possible. Your child will be scheduled in grade level English/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, and Life/Social Skills courses. However, the primary goal is to change the negative behavior.
Our academic courses are an online based curriculum student’s work through at their own pace with assistance from the teacher. As students achieve mastery of a concept they move forward. If they do not achieve mastery they must do remediation assignments until they master the unit. Our teachers are there to provide assistance every step of the way. Because this is a self-paced curriculum, motivated students have the opportunity to recover courses they previously were not successful in. However, this is an opportunity and students must make the effort to take advantage of this opportunity.
STRIVE is a program that focuses on changing the behavior(s) that caused your child to end up in an alternative education placement. Therefore, every student will be on an individualized behavior plan. This plan will define specific goals and we will develop strategies to reach those goals. Your child will have a point sheet based on the strategies set forth in the behavior plan. Each day points will be earned for meeting the behavior goals in each area. We have regularly planned activities built into our calendar. Students who meet their goals on their point sheets are eligible to participate in these activities, students who have not met their goal for the week may not participate.
We will work hard to help your child make the necessary changes to be successful. We want your child to quickly and successfully reintegrate back into the regular education setting and obtain their high school diploma. Our goal is to communicate with you during this process to help reinforce the progress at home. We look forward to working with you and your student.
